John Minnery MC, DCM, MM: From Barrhead and on into Battle, 1914 to 1917

Arthurlie House

Thursday 8 November, 7.15pm

As the centenary commemorations for the end of WW1 approach we welcome guest speaker Gerry Carroll to tell the fascinating story of his great uncle, John Minnery.

John was born in Barrhead in 1894 and worked in the mills until, when in 1912, at 17 years old, he lied about his age to join the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. During WW1 John was wounded three times and decorated twice but went on to have a long military career, which saw him rise through the ranks to Captain and which took him from Barrhead to France to Africa. Gerry will also cover the history of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, the regiment which took hundreds of our local men to the front.

This is a joint event by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure and the Neilston War Memorial Association.
